Chicago Tribune still "World's Greatest Newspaper?"

Like any other Sunday morning, I went out and grabbed my Chicago Tribune. And like any other Sunday morning, I first quickly scanned the front page. According to the Trib, I didn't miss much overnight.

But once I got inside of it a little bit I saw the details of the terrorist attack in Kenya. Hundreds were injured and 39 were killed by what is believed to be five gunman at an upscale shopping mall in Nairobi. I know I don't work in journalism full time for a living, but I like to think my years of experience and my years of teaching combined have given me what I consider to be strong news judgement, and I think an attack of this nature deserved better coverage. Maybe at least a front page mention.

So I started wondering, is it just me or should have this story been given more attention? To get my answer I needed to see what the other papers did today. And this is where the awesome "Today's Front Pages" app from the Newseum in Washington DC comes in.

With their free app you can read the front pages of 1000's of papers daily. It is a great way to not only see what others consider to be the important stories of the day, but also to be able to get a sense and a feel for what is going on in the rest of the world and what is important in communities outside of my own.

So a quick scan of the app helped to prove me right. Papers such as the New York Times, Washington Post, Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Boston Globe, San Franscisco Chronicle, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and Atlanta Journal-Constitution all either mentioned it (previewed it) or ran a story about the attacks on their front pages today.

What did the Chicago Tribune run on their front page?

- A piece about heroin addiction and the deaths it causes.

- A piece about a corrupt stock broker and his legal troubles.

- And an "exclusive" about the design of the new DePaul basketball arena at McCormick Place.

Which one of these do you think maybe, just maybe could have been bumped to another page?

They also previewed two stories on the front page as well. One about gang violence in the city and another about a feature on a local business leader.

Again, do you think one of those could have found a new home for the week?

I know you can't please all the people all the time but this one seems like a no-brainer to me.

To say the Chicago Tribune dropped the ball would be an understatement.
