Comedy Writing

So This Guy Thinks He's Funny?

Picture
For years I've been writing sketch comedy on my own, with friends just for fun and on the radio as a part of a sketch comedy show (in addition to the magazine writing, film and stage writing and television writing I do as well).

After taking a Saturday Night Live sketch writing class at iO Chicago (formally known as Improv Olympic) I've put together the writing packet/portfolio you see to your right.

Maybe it's funny...maybe it's not. Read it, laugh (hopefully) and let me know what you think.

Pre-Produced Comedy Bits

You can read all of the portions of the packet below or click here to see it all together as one large PDF file.

Cold Open
: The first sketch before the show actually begins. Mine is about the Supreme Court ruling regarding marriage equality. Click here to check it out.

Monologue: There are two types of monologues on SNL - A "homebase" monologue (where the host stands on the stage and addresses the audience) and a "backstage" monologue (where the host starts on stage and ends up backstage for some reason). Using Mila Kunis as my host, I have samples of each style: one homebase monologue and one backstage monologue.

Commercial Parodies: If you're a fan of the show, you've probably noticed there are two types of advertisements - pre-produced commercials and live-read ads. I have written one of each. My pre-produced ad is for a fake restaurant called Paul Miller's and the live-read is for Barnes and Noble.

Weekend Update: Three different pieces are included here. 1) Weekend Update News Jokes.* 2) Interview with an existing character** Jebadiah Atkinson; and 3) Interview with a new character we created.

*You can also check out my submission to become a freelance writer for Weekend Update from September 2016 by clicking here.

** If you haven't seen Taran Killan as Jebadiah Atkinson, it might be helpful to watch this first.

TV Parody: This is a parody of a current TV show, and one I think we all (whether we want to or not) know: House Hunters.

Dysfunctional Family Sketch: We have all seen the sketches where the family isn't getting along or they have some strange quirk. Mine is that they all act like they are in a school while the new girlfriend tries to fit in: The Teachers.

For years now I have been trying to be funny.  Sometimes I feel like I succeed, other times I do not.  Below are some of the times where I think it worked out!
